We've just wrapped up an exciting project at Colchester Zoo, where we installed custom rockwork in a newly updated enclosure. For this project, we used a jumbo-sized, flexible polyurethane background, creating a 4.5-metre by 2-metre sheet for the back wall, along with two side panels. These pieces were assembled on-site using durable silicone adhesive, then finished with natural oxides for a realistic look. The rocks were securely fastened with screws, and we applied silicone around them to prevent any gaps, blending everything together seamlessly with colour-matched silicone.
Most of the preparation took place at our factory, which allowed us to minimise on-site time and reduce any disruption. The entire installation was completed in just 10 hours.
Chris from Colchester Zoo, who oversaw the project, was thrilled with the outcome. He complimented the speed of the installation, the minimal mess, and the professionalism of the work, noting that it left a strong impression. He also hinted that we’ll likely be invited back for future projects!
Here are some photos showcasing the installation and the final results.
In addition, we produced a video demonstrating the installation procedure and the team's method of creating a lifelike 3D wall that conceals any seams and overlaps.
